Tai Chi Chuan is mostly known for its slow and soft
movements. But it's clear for anyone, who has seen Tai Chi used as self-defence,
that the slow movements gives great strength and speed. It can be
very useful to practice the movements in Tai Chi fast. Tai Chi has
from the beginning been practiced both slow and fast. The first set
that the Chen family taught changed in pace with explosive movements,
long jumps and stamping in the ground. When the Yang family began to
teach more openly, they saw a need for a form, which was easily
learned for the beginner, the sick and the weak. Many of those who
began to study Tai Chi, did for the purpose of getting a better
health. The Yang Style as it's being taught today, do not have any
explosive and fast movements, all though the fighting techniques are
still intact. In the same way has the Chen Style become both easier
and shorter, but there are still some explosive movements. When the
student had been with his teacher for some years and had become
strong and flexible from the slow movements of Tai Chi, the teacher
gradually began to teach two-persons forms, fast forms and weapons.
Those forms are rarely seen, simply because they are
only being taught to advanced students. The Yang family had several
hundred students and they couldn't all be good. So today the fast
forms are only being taught by teachers, who represents a direct line
from the great masters.
Master Kai-Ying Tungs (Dong Jiying) grandfather, Tung
Ying-Chieh (Dong Yingjie), made two fast forms, which master Kai-Ying
Tung teaches to very serious and persistent students. The first fast
form consists of the same sequence as in the slow form, it is just
performed quicker (2-3-minutes), and with Fa jing (explosive energy).
Some movements are performed slightly differently. Some with long
jumps, which makes its possible to get quickly close to the opponent,
and with stamping in the ground, which makes the kicks powerful. Just
as in the slow Tai Chi you take long steps, but the arm movements are
smaller and more compact. The first movement, "Embrace peacocks
tail", has in the fast version these jumps and stamps.
The arms are also different, they makes a siccor-like
movement and ends with a push, where the fingers are pointing
straight forward. The movement still have the basic parts Ward-off,
pull and push. The fast form is not only for the younger people, all
though they are very dynamic. "In China" master Tung says
"the elder people also like to learn the fast forms, even though
they don't want to learn how to fight. It improves their
concentration and gives them lots of energy". He advice not to
learn the fast form to early. "Many, who sees the fast form,
would like to learn it at once. But they should wait a few years
until they are confident with the slow form."
